Technical Setup

In order to access your electronic classroom and course materials, you must have Internet access and an electronic mail account.

The College recommends a minimum setup for your computer system that will help you access all the tools in the course. This includes a Pentium or better; Windows 98; a modem (28.8 or better will give you best performance); an Internet service provider (ISP). A standard rate for most ISPs now is $19.95 per month for unlimited access. (There may be a small setup fee.) Any provider will do as long as you get an email account and have access to the World Wide Web.

Browsers

Your browser is the tool that "reads" web pages so that you can understand them. Classes require the use of a browser that supports frames and scripting. Please note that the class site requires the use of Netscape 5.0 or better, or Internet Explorer 5.0 or better. You can download these browsers for free. To install the browser, close your browser, Internet connection, and any other programs you have open. Locate the temporary folder on your hard drive. Open the folder and double-click on the file. A wizard will guide you through the installation process.

AOL Users

You can still access the courses, but you need to have Netscape on your system, log on with AOL, shrink (not close) the window, and then open Netscape and enter the correct URL. Netscape's technical help page gives additional suggestions and help with this.

Microsoft Word

The College instructors recommend that students use MSWord for papers and assignments. Be sure to put your name and course number on the actual document.

Hint: When filling in forms on the Internet, copy the question on the web page. Minimize the Web page. Open MSWord, start a new document and paste what you have copied from the Web to the new document in Word. Spell-check and save this new document. Save it to a folder for this class. Maximize the Web page and paste the answer in the white square.

Answer the question in your own words. If you cut and paste somebody else's work as your own, you are plagiarizing.

Text Editors

Many of the assignments use forms. Do not type long answers into the boxes, when filling in a form on the Internet. When using a browser form, you cannot edit or use spell check. Use a text editor, such as Notepad or WordPad. Move the mouse down to the Start window on Windows 98, click on Programs, click on Accessories, then click on Notepad or WordPad. Compose your answer and save the copy on your hard drive to paste into boxes later.

RealOne Player

RealOne Player is a multimedia browser plug-in/player available for download at no cost. RealPlayer will enable you to listen to and/or watch the videos. Videos show business people, professionals, and consultants from the business world. The real world comes alive as these people discuss problems and decisions based on how they operate their business. Often you see operations in the business being discussed. The videos help you experience living examples of concepts presented . . . experiences often impossible to offer in a classroom. Note: Almost everything that is presented in video or audio also will be presented in text form.

For system requirements, see instructions on the RealOne Player site. http://www.real.com/

If you already have a previous version of RealOne Player on your system, upgrade to the most recent version.

Download the free RealOne Player which plays live and on-demand RealAudio and RealVideo. Print a copy of the instructions for downloading and installing. Click on the text link "RealPlayer" to download the free software. Complete the form. After you click "Download Now," you will be taken to a page with links to different download sites. Click on any one of these. The file will automatically download to your hard drive, usually C:\Real\Player\, unless you specify otherwise during the installation process. To install the RealPlayer, close your browser, Internet connection, and any other programs you have open. Locate the temporary folder on your hard drive. Open the folder and double-click on the file. A wizard will guide you through the installation process.

Zipping and Unzipping Files

Many files are compressed for transfer via the Internet. The following sources can help you in compressing (zipping) and uncompressing (unzipping) files for posting and downloading from a web site, respectively.
