Begin researching your topic in general encyclopedias. Note important concepts, key terms, aspects of your topic which interest you, and bibliographies.

Then examine any subject encyclopedias that cover your topic. Subject encyclopedias are a researcher's treasure trove of information. Most of these gems didn't even exist for us ten years ago. Articles in subject encyclopedias are written by experts, give in-depth information, and usually contain extensive bibliographies to lead you to additional sources.

GENERAL ENCYCLOPEDIAS

Most of the general encyclopedias listed here may be found in most academic libraries.

Encyclopedia Americana. Ref AE5.E333

Strongest in science and technology - American slant on topics - many brief articles rather than fewer long articles (similar to Britannica).

New Encyclopaedia Britannica. Ref AE5.N482

Most scholarly (and largest) of all English language encyclopedias - Micropedia covers brief, factual topics while Macropedia is reserved for long, scholarly articles that are especially good at presenting ideas and facts in their larger contexts.

World Book. Ref AE5.W55

Considered by many to be the best all-around encyclopedia - articles are directed at the age level most likely to be reading them ("Animals" for the early grades, for example) - charts, pictures, many features make this a favorite for all ages.

Most libraries will also have one or more CD-ROM versions of a general encyclopedia. Some of these products, like Encyclopaedia Britannica, permit the user to download information.

Next, examine any subject encyclopedias that cover your topic. Articles in subject encyclopedias are written by experts, give in-depth information, and usually contain extensive bibliographies to lead you to additional sources. This type of resource is a treasure trove of information.

The site is a wiki, which means that anyone can edit articles, simply by clicking on the edit this page link. It runs on MediaWiki software. (NOTE: This is a good source for information, but, because there is no editorial control, always use another resource to verify Wikipedia information.)
  • The Internet Public Library - a master list of links to general and subject specific encyclopedias.
  • Information Please Almanac - Current - Combines the contents of an encyclopedia, a dictionary, and several up-to-the-minute almanacs loaded with statistics, facts, and historical records. It places the resources of an entire reference information center at your fingertips. Whatever you are interested in, whether it's sports, entertainment, history, you name it, a search will get you the facts on your topic.
