Admission Requirements for the Veterinary Assisting Program

Admission to the VAP is on a "space available" basis after students have been selected for the Veterinary Technology Program.  Students in the VAP are exempt from completing the TASP test but must complete assessment testing before enrolling in the VAP. You may start the VAP in either the fall or spring semester.

What is assessment testing?

The assessment examination evaluates your math, reading, and writing skills.  For further information on assessment, contact the Cedar Valley Counseling Center at 972-860-8262.

When will I be notified that I have been accepted into the VAP?

Fall Semester

Students wishing to start in the VAP during the fall semester will be granted permission to take VT classes during the open registration week just prior to the start of the fall semester.  You will not be allowed to preregister for classes prior to the week of open registration.  Students must receive approval for enrollment in VAP technical courses from the Program Director, Dr. Aleice Summers.  You must personally visit with Dr. Summers in the open registration period to secure approval for enrolling in VAP technical courses. To set up a visitation, you may call Dr. Summers at 972-860-8194 or E-mail at pas3505@dcccd.edu.

Spring Semester

Students wishing to start the VAP during the spring semester will be granted permission to take VAP technical courses during the preregistration period for the spring semester.  Students should expect that some of the VAP technical courses will not be available during the spring semester.  Because of this, it may take you more than one calendar year to complete the curriculum.

Summer Semester

Technical courses required for the large and small animal veterinary assisting certificates are not available during the summer semester.

What is a VAP technical course?

Technical courses are those courses that directly apply to the major area of study.  These courses are in contrast to the general education courses that are required by the VAP curriculum.  The technical courses required for the certificate are those that have a course prefix of VTHT.  The general education courses are the English, speech communications, math, and biology courses.

Will these courses apply to the Vet Tech associate degree if I decide to continue my studies?

Yes, they will.  All of the courses in the VAP directly apply to the requirements for the associate degree in Veterinary Technology.

I am interested in the program, but I still have more questions.  Who should I contact?

Contact Dr. Alleice Summers, interim director of the CVC Vet Tech Department
