Admission Requirements
A. Information sessions
For your assistance in submitting an application to the Veterinary Technology Program, information meetings are individually scheduled throughout the year. Please contact the Program Director at (972) 860-8019 for more information and to make an appointment with a staff member for an information meeting.
B. Assessment
Assessment and Advisement
Procedures - Assessment is the process of evaluating readiness for
certain college courses and the probabilities for success in those
courses. The College has an assessment and advisement program for
entering students which is a required part of the enrollment
process. The assessment program includes the completion of a
questionnaire which documents information on career and work plans,
previous academic achievement, and other relevant information.
Assessment also includes an examination of individual skill levels
in reading, writhing, and mathematics. Information on skills may
come from ACT, SAT, previous college-level work, or from scores on
the standardized tests administered by the College. Students who
have taken TAKS (Texas Academic Skills Program) also need their TAKS
scores.
Because of the importance of such information, students should have
official copies of ACT, SAT, or TAKS scores and transcripts mailed
to the Admissions Office or bring them personally at the time of
application to the College. It is the responsibility of the student
to make these available.
The assessment program provides information needed in advisement.
Academic advisement sessions provide a framework for informed
decision-making on the part of students and advisors. Information on
a student’s skills, abilities, career plans, educational background,
life experiences, and motivation is important in helping the student
and advisor make selections from the many educational options
available. However, the College reserves the right to insist
students enroll in the appropriate remediation should assessment
results indicate a need for the improvement of skills in reading,
writing, and /or mathematics.
Details of assessment and advisement procedures are available
through the College
Counseling Center or in the "Schedule of Classes" each semester.
Students who do not have at least 3 college-level credit hours prior
to the 1989 Fall Semester must take the TAKS test prior to their
first semester of enrollment in college-level credit hours. Should
students fail any or all of the reading, writing, or mathematics
sections of TAKS, they will be required to enroll continuously and
participate in the appropriate remediation until the failed section
is passed.
C. Prerequisite Courses
Applicants are ranked for admission according to the grade point average achieved on four program prerequisite courses. Applicants whose GPA’s are highest on the following four prerequisite courses are admitted for the number of spaces available:
| Course Number | Course Title | Credit Hours | Lecture Hours | Lab Hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BIOL 1406 | General Biology | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| ENGL 1301 | Composition I | 3 | 3 | 0 |
| Math Elective* | 3 | 3 | 0 | |
| SPCH Elective** | 3 | 3 | 0 | |
| Total | 13 | 12 | 3 |
* MATH elective must be selected from TECM 1303 Technical Mathematics or any three-credit hour course contained in the DCCCD Approved List for Mathematics.
** SPCH elective must be selected from Introduction to Speech Communication (SPCH 1311), Fundamentals of Public Speaking (SPCH 1315), Interpersonal Communication (SPCH 1318) or Business and Professional Communication (SPCH 1321)
D. Application Packet Submission
Each applicant must submit a completed application packet to the Veterinary Technology Program at Cedar Valley College prior to the enrollment deadline.
NOTE: This process is separate from applying for general admission to the College. If you are not currently enrolled, please contact the Cedar Valley Admissions Office to Complete an application for college admission or download an application to the DCCCD.
The Veterinary Technology Program application packet MUST include:
- A completed Veterinary Technology application form (included in the application packet).
- One legible copy of transcripts from all colleges previously
attended including colleges within the Dallas County Community
College District (DCCCD). Transcripts are required, even for
courses which do not directly apply to the Veterinary Technology
Program, by the Admission’s Office.
Allow 6-8 weeks to receive official transcripts from colleges outside the DCCCD.
If you have taken courses at more than one college in the DCCCD, only one transcript is needed. Allow at least one week to receive an official DCCCD transcript. - A photocopy of catalog descriptions of all courses taken outside of DCCCD colleges which the applicant seeks to transfer to this program are recommended. Courses presented for transfer consideration should be clearly marked on the photocopy.
- A copy of the students TAKS scores. Students are encouraged to have successfully completed all three areas of the TAKS test prior to application to the Veterinary Technology Program.
- A signed "Statement of Student’s Responsibility" form (included in the application packet).
E. Application Filing Period
Applications to the program may be submitted at any time during the year. Currently, our 1st year students start in the fall of the year. Around June 1st of each year, the initial selections will be made for the class that enters the program in the fall of the same year. Students who file an application by June 1st will be notified of their acceptance status no later than July 1st. Students who miss the June 1st deadline may still submit an application. If spaces are still available in the upcoming class, they will be filled from the later applications. Any applications received after September 1 will be held for inclusion in the next year’s class.
F. Selection Process
Applicants will be selected for admission according to the following competitive ranking process:
- Applicants are listed by grade point average (GPA) on the four prerequisite courses from highest (i.e. 4.0) to lowest (2.0). A minimum of a (2.0) GPA is required on the four prerequisite courses.
- When two or more applicants have the same GPA, the total number of general education support courses are listed from highest number of credit hours completed (i.e. 23 hours) to lowest (i.e. 0 hours).
- When two or more applicants have the same GPA on the
prerequisite courses and the same number of general education
support course credit hours completed, the overall GPA on the
required support courses is used to rank order applicants.
NOTE: Early submission of an application does not influence ranking for admission.
| GPA on 4 Prerequisite Courses | #Hours of Completed General Edu. Courses | GPA on Completed General Edu. Courses | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applicant #1 | 4.0 | 17 | |
| Applicant #2 | 4.0 | 14 | |
| Applicant #3 | 3.7 | 9 | 3.0 |
| Applicant #4 | 3.7 | 9 | 2.6 |
| Applicant #5 | 3.6 | 12 | 2.5 |
If four spaces were available for admission, applicants #1 through #4 would be accepted.
- Applicants may improve their ranking by 1) repeating one or more of the four prerequisite courses to earn a higher prerequisite grade point average; 2) completing additional general education support courses hours; and 3) earning a high grade point average on the general education support courses.
- If the number of qualified applicants does not meet the number of available spaces, non-qualified applicants will be allowed to enroll in Veterinary Technology courses on a space available basis. First consideration will be given to those applicants with the highest GPA in the greatest number of pre-requisite courses.
