Assistants and Technicians
At the present time, there is a great deal of discussion about what the various members of the veterinary medical team should be called. There is also much confusion on the part of the public regarding the level of training each member of the practice team possesses.
The veterinary technician has the responsibility of supporting the veterinarian. This person is qualified in many areas including surgical assisting, laboratory testing, radiography, prescribed treatment and nursing, and client education. Veterinary technicians are graduates of two-year educational programs accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Veterinary Technologists are graduates of four-year AVMA-accredited educational programs. VT's are frequently credentialed by the state in which they work as an RVT, CVT, or LVT.
The veterinary assistant supports the veterinarian and the veterinary technician. The assistant's responsibilities include feeding, restraining, transporting, and exercising animals. The assistant may also be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the veterinary practice.
