taking on-line exams
Students in Level 1, 2, 3, and some Level 4 courses will take their course written exams on-line through their course management system. Each exam has a large bank of test questions and each time the student takes the exam, their course management system will randomly assign a predetermined number of these questions to the exam that they are taking. Each exam is timed, and students have a finite amount of time to complete the exam. The time to take the exam will vary from class to class and exam to exam depending on the difficulty of the exam. Students may take the exam at any time once it has been made available by the staff and they may take the exam as many ties as they want, until they achieve the score that they want. The course management system only retains the student’s most recent score, not the highest score. Students do not have to be proctored to take the on-line exams. Many students use the on-line exams to continually review the course material and assess their knowledge of the material. The on-line exams should be thought of as a learning tool, not just an assessment tool. There are specific written instructions for new students in each course site in the “Course Documents” section on how to take on-line exams.
If students are unwilling to take on-line exams, then we will provide paper exams to the Preceptor to administer to the student during the week that the student is required to take the exam. Paper exams must be directly proctored by an approved Preceptor, can only be taken once, and once completed the Preceptor must initial each page of the exam and then submit it to the course instructor for grading. Paper exams are not open-book or open-notes exams, and the highest standards of academic integrity must be maintained during these tests. It greatly serves the best interests of the student and Preceptor from an academic and a logistical point of view to use the on-line testing system. Since we started on-line testing, student scores and learning have increased, and student retention is up as well.
