CEDAR VALLEY COLLEGE VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
    3030 N. Dallas Avenue
    Lancaster, TX 75134

    Dear Preceptor:

If you are a new preceptor let me take the opportunity to thank you for your willingness to serve in this capacity and if you are a continuing preceptor, thank you for your continued participation in the DEVTP program. I realize that all preceptors are busy and it is a significant responsibility that you are undertaking. Let me assure you that you are helping our students further their education, and the rewards that they receive from this program will come back to you as well. Your clinic or hospital will benefit from their educational experience and training, and perhaps you may also learn or relearn some valuable lessons in the process.

New Preceptors should be aware of the following:

  1. There is a wealth of information on the DEVTP program, and specifically on Preceptor responsibilities posted on our web site (http://telecollege.dcccd.edu/vettech) in the “Preceptors” section. We strongly recommend that you go to the site and read the information there. At the start of every new semester we hold Preceptor orientations through our phone bridge system, called Meeting Place. New Preceptors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Preceptor orientation materials on the web and then participate in Preceptor orientations if you have questions or concerns.
  2. Posted on our web site in the “Preceptors” section is a schedule of the lessons that your student will be expected to complete along with a specific timeline for completion. Please review the schedule and sit down with your student to set up specific times to complete these lessons. Also, please take note of the supervision that is required for each lesson. Also posted on the site are the Preceptor Guidelines and the Student/Preceptor orientation manual.
  3. The students in our program have weekly Preceptor checklists that you will need to sign and the student will need to submit. Students may complete their assignments anytime during the week, but they should stay on a weekly schedule of completing their assignments. If you are not signing weekly Preceptor checklists, then your students are not doing their work, and are not passing their courses.
  4. Students in Level 1, 2, and 3, courses will take their written exams on-line, and do not need to be proctored during these exams. You will still need to supervise and assist with clinical assignments and in some courses with practical exams.

If you have any questions any time during the course, please feel free to contact the DEVTP office by phone at 1-877-342-3482 or fax at (972) 860-8057.
